Packing

But why “The Pedlar’s Pack”?

The story goes that after a dream, John Chapman, the pedlar, walked to London to seek his fortune
but instead found the treasure in his own back garden.

The Pedlar’s Pack aims to help us to find “the treasure at home”

What’s in The Pedlar's Pack?

The Pack is a depository;
The Pack is a place for reflections;
The Pack is a place to grow;
The Pack is a work in progress.

So – what now?
Now we have to make some boxes and begin! Try the "pages" on the right to explain what we're about.....

The Pack is a place for reflections

One of the most popular of trade-goods in all societies must be a mirror. The Pedlar's Pack contains many mirrors in which we can see ourselves. Hopefully, as Rabbie Burns wrote:

"O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us."
(O would some power the giver give us, to see ourselves as others see us.)

Robert Burns, Poem "To a Louse" - verse 8
Scottish national poet (1759 - 1796)

This collecting up of bits and unfinished pieces in to the Pack, and the reflection that is needed to see them tidied away, can only be good for us. Sometimes there will be loose ends that we don’t want to cut off. That’s fine.

Some of what we’ve been, we very definitely want to hang on to and to take forward.

Some of what we haven’t “finished”, we are only too glad to see ended with decency!

Packing in this way is a sort of an audit; but like all audits (unless you’re blessed with OCD), too much can get to you!

Pack life is all about moving on; but sometimes, you can’t move on until you’ve tidied up!
